How Can God Still Love Me?

2 min read

Sometimes we choose to make decisions that aren’t the best, and those past mistakes can leave us facing a torrent of guilt, regret, and doubt. After all we have done, how could we still be fully loved by God? Surely every sin we commit decreases our value, throws off our purpose, and leaves us falling just a bit short.

A Priceless Payment

The Bible tells us, however, those thoughts just aren’t true. Jeremiah 1:5 says that God knew us and set us apart even before He formed us in the womb. He knew every decision we would ever make, and He created us anyway. He knew every sin we would commit, and He still sent His Son to die for us. Romans 5:8 says, “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

It doesn’t matter what’s in our past. God already knew it and still decided we were worth dying for.

God doesn't look at us and see our dents. He looks at us and sees Jesus' perfection.

In 1 Peter 1:18-19, it is explained that we weren't paid for with gold, silver, or any other monetary or materialistic item. We were paid for with the "precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect." God paid the highest price possible so He could call us His own, and that payment cannot be revoked.

Defined by Christ

In Christ, the only person who can define us is the one who created us. We are "fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:14), and our God loves us with an unfathomable intensity. 1 Peter 2:9-12 says that we are chosen.

God is the only person who can define us, and once we are in Christ, our regrets, baggage, mistakes are overcome. God doesn't look at us and see our dents. He looks at us and sees Jesus' perfection.

Battling Doubt

When you begin to doubt God could love you because of your past, remember that His word is true, perfect, and never failing. We must refuse to allow the voice of the enemy to tell us who we are. In fact, when we become obsessed with the voice of the enemy, allowing Him to dictate our value, we can’t hear God’s truth.

If we believe we are priceless, hand crafted treasures, we will behave as such. Live in freedom from your regrets, believing in 2 Corinthians 5:17: “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
