This week at CityWell, we dive into James 5:1-6—a powerful passage with a warning for the rich oppressors. James, in a bold rhetorical move, addresses a group unlikely to hear his words, but his message is vital for the believers who do.
The sermon explores three reminders from this text:
Nothing in this Life Will Last
James warns that the wealth of the world—food security, clothing, and even gold—will decay and disappear. What would James call out as status symbols today? Cars, homes, investments? The challenge remains: are we building treasures on earth or storing up rewards in heaven?
God Hears and Responds
James reassures us that God hears the cries of those who’ve been wronged. When the powerful exploit the weak, the Lord of Hosts, the God of Armies, stands as their defender.
God Will Judge
The passage closes with a sobering reminder: those who indulge in luxury, hoard resources, and harm others will face God’s judgment. But for believers, the good news is clear—through Christ, we are freed from this judgment.
